The Winner of DAI's 1st Annual University Student Filmmaking Contest is UT Austin Film and Media Student
DAI announced that Ben Root, of Austin, Texas, is the winner of their 1st annual University Student Filmmaking Contest, in which students were tasked to bring an inspirational leadership story to life in three minutes or less while demonstrating strong interviewing and filmmaking skills.
Ben is currently studying film and media production at the University of Texas at Austin.
“I believe that a good film accounts for the nuanced parts of life that we can’t always definitely answer, and I understand the delicacy of some of the issues we touch on as filmmakers. The responsibility of a filmmaker goes beyond production, beyond just crafting a good story–it is also to be responsible about the stories you tell, and to be sure to do justice to who you represent.”
The winning film submission “The Archer Hadley Story":
Ben will travel to Nepal July 18 – 26, 2017 with DAI’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Helen McAllister, a UT-Austin Alum, and professional filmmaker Sean Sheridan. Sean will mentor the UT student as he captures a story of a young Nepali Christian leader who is using the skills they have gained through DAI’s programs to make a greater impact in their community. Ben will then travel to DAI’s International Service Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado for a one-day post-production workshop with professional editor Zach Fowler.
Helen McAllister shares, “We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of Ben’s film and look forward to helping him continue to develop his filmmaking skills. It will be an amazing opportunity for him to get real-world experience, and witness first-hand the impact of DAI’s work in Nepal.”
While the DAI team is finalizing the details for the Nepal trip they are also working on plans for the next contest, which will be introduced to film school educators in August with submissions due April 1, 2018. Educators interested in being notified of the new filmmaking contest should email email@example.com. Details for the upcoming contest can be found at www.daintl.org/filmcontest.
