South Asia is home to a disproportionately high percentage of the world’s desperately poor. Coronavirus-related restrictions have resulted in severe difficulties for millions of migrant workers, garment factory workers and poor villagers who depend on daily wages. For many, hunger is more of a real concern than the coronavirus.
Many of our DAI staff and alumni in different countries throughout the subcontinent are directly connected with vulnerable groups and are already providing vital assistance in this crucial time. On-the-ground work in which DAI is currently involved includes:
- Urgent and essential food distribution to the poor
- Supplies for children's homes in need
- Medical equipment and protective gear for hospitals and clinics
- Hygiene products and masks for the poor
Besides these urgent needs, we are also preparing to help the innumerable poor who will be without pay for several months, even as national lockdowns end.
