Overview

Mainline churches in this region have existed for generations and in some cases have grown cold and stagnated.

At the same time an enormous “harvest” is underway as thousands have come to faith in recent years, in areas where Christianity has rarely existed before. These extremes have resulted in a wide variety of leadership issues. New believers are “on fire” about their faith, but need discipleship and training to stay one step ahead of their followers. Other leaders need to be reawakened in their faith, and refreshed spiritually.

DAI’s Response

DAI is so thankful for a variety of mature local staff who have responded to the needs of leaders in the region both by drawing on DAI’s MAOL program and by customizing DAI workshops to respond to local issues. Some programs focus on discipling leaders who are new believers at the village level, some focus on younger urban leaders directly impacting the region’s future, and still others on renewing and encouraging traditional church leaders who are in key leadership positions, but need spiritual renewal. In the complex fabric of this region, it is exciting to have appropriate responses at so many levels which together deeply impact Christian leaders.

Some Leaders are Made, not Born

History of DAI in the Region

DAI first began working in South Asia with non-formal workshops in 1997. In 1999 we opened our first ministry center in South Asia. Our work expanded to the Himalaya region of Nepal in 2005. In both Bangladesh and Myanmar DAI has not had local staff until recently, but developed projects with key partners in each country, resulting in many leaders served.

Work in Indonesia has focused on the eastern part of the nation, Papua, with a program of discipleship for younger leaders and the opening of desperately needed elementary schools in the highlands which are impacting the children, their families and the staff. Learn More

Following several workshops in Sri Lanka, DAI was able to begin a partnership with Lanka Bible College to offer the MA program in 2013.
